<p>This syory has always been thought of as a myth until now! Deep within the Amazon rain wilderness lies a berry that has been an Amazonian treasure for hundreds of years. The Acai fruit sheds many answers to the myths of old.</p>
<p>(pronounced Ah-sigh-ee), this tiny fruit has been cultivated by the Amazonian tribes of the for thousands of years. It has proven to be a cure all from ailments like the common cold to diabetes. New scientific data has even linked this tiny fruit to certain types of curing cancer.</p>
<p>The legend of the acai fruit has been spoken of for centuries amongst the indeginous people of the Amazon. Once upon a time there was a prosperous tribe that faced certain death due to an intense famine that had swept the region. Desperate for a solution, the tribal leader made a decree that all firstborn children were to be sacrificed.</p>
<p>This declaration even affected his own family. He discovered that his own daughter, Laca, was about to give birth, so she to would have to sacrifice her firstborn child.</p>
<p>In his daughter&#8217;s despair, she locked herself in her room, refusing to eat or drink anything. One night, she heard what she interpreted to be her baby&#8217;s cries. She stumbled out of the house immediately and there, resting under a palm tree, appeared a vision of the baby she had lost.</p>
<p>The following morning the tribe was saddened to discover the lifeless body of the tribal leaders daughter under the palm. When the father looked to the heavens, he noticed that the palm tree contained a plentiful source of berries which they latter called acai fruit</p>
<p>The acai fruit saved the tribe from certain death through hunger and to this day has been key to the offspring of that tribe where the acai fruit has proven to be the primary export of the people of Belem where the acai fruit is harvested.</p>

<p>To understand the way that free radicals and antioxidants interact, you must first understand a bit about cells and molecules. This is a quick course in Physiology/Chemistry lesson: The human body is composed of many different types of cells. </p>
<p>Molecules are atoms of one or more elements that are joined by a chemical bond. Cells are made up of many different molecules.</p>
<p>Atoms are made up of a nucleus, protons, electrons, and neutrons. The number positively charged particles (protons) in the nucleus of the atom is what determines how many negatively charged particles (electron) will surround the atom.</p>
<p>Electrons are responsible for the chemical reactions that take place inside the atom as well as the substance that holds the atom together to form molecules. Electrons orbit the atom in one or more shells.</p>
<p>The innermost shell is full when it has two electrons. When the first shell is full, electrons begin to fill the second shell. When the second shell has eight electrons, it is full.</p>
<p>The most important structural characteristic of an atom for determining its chemical behavior is the number of electrons in its outer shell. </p>
<p>An atom that has a full outer shell does not enter in chemical reactions. Atoms seek to reach a state of maximum stability by one of the following:</p>
<p>Eradicate or pick up electrons to fill or empty the shell</p>
<p>Bonding with other atoms to share electrons to complete the outer shell</p>
<p>Atoms regularly complete their outer shells by sharing electrons with other atoms. Sharing electrons allows the atoms that are bound together to satisfy the conditions of maximum stability for the molecule.</p>
<p>Usually when a split occurs, it never leaves the molecule with an odd, unpaired set of electrons. However, when bond does split, free radicals are created&#8211;they tend to move and react quickly to other compounds as they begin to attempt to capture as many electrons as they can to achieve maximum stability.</p>
<p>Traditionally, free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule they come across&#8211; &#8220;stealing&#8221; its electron. When the &#8220;attacked&#8221; molecule loses its electron, it too now becomes a free radical thus starting a chain reaction. Once this process is started, it can cascade and finally result in the disruption of a living cell.</p>
<p>During metabolism, free radicals will normally arise&#8211;there are even times when the body will naturally create free radicals for situations like neutralizing viruses and bacteria. Another way free radicals enter the body is by pollution such as radiation, smoke, and insecticides.</p>
<p>The body usually can defend free radicals, however when antioxidants are unavailable or the production of free radicals becomes too much, damage can occur. The most important thing to remember here is that free radical damage hastens the aging process.</p>

<p>In a first to investigate the acai berry, the University of Florida found in a recent study that the fruit contained enough antioxidants to destroy human cancer cells.</p>
<p>This study showed that acai berry triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of the leukemia cells tested according to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry where the results were published.</p>
<p>Acai berry&#8217;s provide a rich source of antioxidants which are key to fighting harmful radicals that can lead to cancer. The study was important in showing the importance of reasons why the acai berry should be part of a daily diet.</p>
<p>An very important thing to note here is that this study did not intend to demonstrate that the elements found in the acai berry can prevent leukemia in humans.</p>
<p>The benefits on the acai berry related to leukemia was never intended to raise any kind of false hope. The findings are still very encouraging however. Elements that have proven well in cell-culture trials have proven very beneficial when tested on humans.</p>
<p>Other fruits have proven similar results in killing cancer cells like mangoes, grapes and guavas. Scientist are still unsure what role antioxidants play in fighting cancer cells as there are other factors that come into play as well.</p>
<p>The fragility of the acai berry is the primary reason so little is known because they must be consumed shortly after they are picked. The process of extracting the important elements of the acai berry is new and has also delayed the process of researching in depth.</p>
<p>The Euterpe oleracea is the palm tree that produces the acai berry, and are commonly found along the flood plains of the amazon river. The color of the berry is a dark purple and the size of a blue berry. There is a large seed that is surrounded by an edible pulp encased in a thin layer.</p>
<p>The local people of the amazon have been using the acai berry to treat conditions ranging from skin disorders to digestive problems. recently, the acai berry has proven helpful in loosing weight and lowering cholesterol.</p>

<p>A recent study done by USDA scientist found that artichokes, beans, and acai berry were among the best foods to find the highest levels of the disease fighting compound known as antioxidants.</p>
<p>The new found discovery that Russet potatoes, pecans, and cinnamon contained high amounts of antioxidants was unknown until this study was done&#8211;confrmation was also given that . Antioxidants are important as they are thought to fight cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.</p>
<p>&#8220;The bottom line is the same: eat more fruits and veggies,&#8221; says Ronald L. Prior, Ph.D., a chemist and nutritionist with the USDA&#8217;s Arkansas Children&#8217;s Nutrition Center in Little Rock, Ark., and lead author of the study. &#8220;This study confirms that those foods are full of benefits, particularly those with higher levels of antioxidants. Nuts and spices are also good sources.&#8221; </p>
<p>This is the most comprehensive and complete study ever done on foods with antioxidants as the USDA used high tech equipment and analyzed more foods than in the previous studies. The researchers analyzed over 100 foods like acai berry, fruits, vegetables, spices and nuts.</p>
<p>The foods were analyzed and measured for the concentration levels of antioxidants and the capacity per serving of the antioxidants. Research showed the top fruits were the acai berry, cranberries, blueberries, and black berries. The highest levels found in the nut category were walnuts, hazelnuts, and pecans&#8211;Russet potatoes, beans, and artichokes were found to have the highest level antioxidant concentration in the vegetable category.</p>
<p>ground cloves, ground cinnamon, and oregano were found to have high amounts of antioxidants. Spices are usually consumed in small amounts, even though many are high in antioxidants.</p>
<p>The data should prove useful for those seeking to add more antioxidants in their diet. You must still use caution as the total antioxidant capacity of the foods does not necessarily reflect their potential health benefit, which depends on how they are absorbed and utilized in the body. </p>
<p>There is currently no guideline by the government for which antioxidants to consume as well as how many to take as part of their daily diet&#8211;this is also the case for vitamins and minerals. A major reason to this is due to a general consensus amongst researchers.</p>
<p>For the time being it is recommended that you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants like cranberries and acai berries.</p>

<p>Two types of patients that were diagnosed with mild Alzheimer&#8217;s showed contrasting results when dealing with the patients brain size-patients with a high physical regimen had larger brains than the patients with that had low levels of activity.</p>
<p>121 people age 60 and older underwent fitness tests using a treadmill as well as brain scans to measure the white matter, gray matter and total volume of their brains. Of the group, 57 were in the early stages of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease while the rest of the group did not have dementia.</p>
<p>&#8220;People with early Alzheimer&#8217;s disease who were less physically fit had four times more brain shrinkage when compared to normal older adults than those who were more physically fit, suggesting less brain shrinkage related to the Alzheimer&#8217;s disease process in those with higher fitness levels,&#8221; said study author Jeffrey M. Burns, MD, of the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Kansas City and member of the American Academy of Neurology.</p>
<p>The results remained the same regardless of age, gender, severity of dementia, physical activity and frailty. There was no relationship between higher fitness levels and brain changes in the group of people without dementia.</p>
<p>&#8220;People with early Alzheimer&#8217;s disease may be able to preserve their brain function for a longer period of time by exercising regularly and potentially reducing the amount of brain volume lost. Evidence shows decreasing brain volume is tied to poorer cognitive performance, so preserving more brain volume may translate into better cognitive performance,&#8221; Dr. Burns said.</p>
<p>This is one of the first studies to explore the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and Alzheimer&#8217;s disease,&#8221; mentions Dr. Burns.</p>
<p>With all this positive news, Dr. Burns wants to make clear that people should be cautious when interpreting the study results because scientists only observed the standard measure of fitness at one point in time.</p>
<p>Support for this research came from the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the University of Kansas Endowment Association, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Oppenheimer Foundation.</p>

<p>Calories, do you really understand its meaning? Most people still do not know what a calorie is. When asked about its meaning, most people would link it to dieting. However there is far more to calories than just a word that is linked to weight loss. Lets see if we can explain it a little better.</p>
<p>Understanding Calories</p>
<p>A calorie is a unit of measurement used to quantify energy obtained from food that is used by the human body for fuel. When there is an excess of calories, these are not burnt and would be stored by the body as fat. There are different types of calories and different forms in which calories may be obtained. </p>
<p>The main types of calories include: carbohydrates, fats and proteins. All of them burn when used in the body and then turn into heat energy, which is generally called calories.</p>
<p>Each type of calorie varies in terms of chemical and physical properties. Here are the essential things that you need to know about each calorie type.</p>
<p>Getting To Know The Feared Carbohydrates</p>
<p>Carbohydrates are the most common type of calorie. It is found on foods that are rich on starch and sugar. Most of them are from plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, and grains. Most legumes, such as lentils, beans, and peas, are also rich with carbs. However, dairy products would be the only foods that come from animals which have a lot of carb content. (Kills the idea that milk and cookies is &#8220;kinda good for you&#8221; don&#8217;t it.)</p>
<p>Carbohydrates are normally classified into two subdivisions: simple and complex</p>
<p>Simple carbs are normally sugars, such as glucose and fructose, which come from fruits and  vegetables. Another type would be lactose, which comes from milk. Last would be sucrose, which comes from cane sugar. (Rule of thumb is any thing that ends in &#8220;ose&#8221; is a type of sugar.)</p>
<p>Sugar that is for everyday use is pure sucrose. A lot of simple carbs that you eat are sugars that are mixed with processed foods such as cookies, sodas etc. These add-ons are the major reason why sugar accounts for 16% of total calories that are consumed by Americans according to most health surveys.</p>
<p>The complex types are chains or series of simple carbs, which primarily consist of starches along with fiber, which can be found in all foods that come from plants. However, plants store carbohydrates in the form of starch. Foods that have high complex carbs would include grains and products that come from it like bread and pasta. Also, potatoes, beans, corn, and other vegetables are also high in complex carbs.</p>
<p>Shadowed Proteins</p>
<p>Since carbohydrates seem to be the most popular type of calorie, proteins on the other hand seem to be the most over shadowed in comparison with the fame of fats and carbs. However, it is an important kind of calorie that you&#8217;ll need to develop body muscle.</p>
<p>Proteins have about 4 kilocalories per gram. Majority of this kind of calorie can not be naturally produced by the human body and must originate from dietary sources. The main sources of protein include: eggs, nuts, meats, legumes, grains, dairy products. (And yes some of these are also those nasty carb carriers.)</p>
<p>According to recent studies, men between ages 19 to 70 should consume 56g of protein everyday in order to avoid deficiency. On the other hand, women within the same age range should get at least 46g/day. Those people, such as certain athletes consume more protein then average in order to increase muscle mass.</p>
<p>Fats</p>
<p>Fats,would probably be the most unwanted kind of calorie by many. However, it still plays an important role in the normal function of the body. The body cannot absorb Vitamins A, E, D and K if not for it. They play an important role in the maintenance of healthy hair and skin. Protection is another function, since they protect various organs from shock. They are insulators, which is very important especially for people that live in colder climates.</p>
<p>Animals and plants both contain types of fats. Types of animal fats would include lard, butter and fish oil, while plant fats would include soy beans, peanuts, sunflower seeds, olives, coconuts, sesames, and vegetable oils.</p>
