Roller Derby was never really a big deal in the US, but has been around forever and was a staple of the early days of television. It was similar in its promotional format to its better known “sports entertainment” cousin, professional wrestling. It was frequently seen in the same bad timeslots on the same low powered UHF TV stations, and it was run by the same loose confederation of promoters and businessmen that characterized the regional territory era of pro wrestling. That’s where the similarity to wrestling ends–it’s storylines made pro wrestling angles look like high drama. While there is a definite history to the sport–great teams like the LA T-Birds and Bay Bombers, and legendary skaters like Ann Calvello it never really stuck in the public consciousness like the pre-Hulk Hogan era of pro wrestling.

When the original purveyors of the sport quit promoting in the early’80s most thought it was dead and gone until a ‘new school’ of roller derby surfaced on cable TV via the A&E reality series Roller Girls. It featured a local, all-girl roller derby league in Austin, Texas and followed the lives of the players on and off the track. A sport that had faded into the lowest level of obscurity had been rediscovered and embraced by an eclectic group of young women. They had kept the same essential format, thrown in a healthy dose of burlesque camp and Varga pin-up inspired glamour and changed the competitive format and renamed the competitions “bouts” a la MMA or boxing. The result was a compelling mixture of glamour, toughness and athleticism driven by a healthy dose of punk rock “do it yourself” mentality.

Today, roller derby is a full blown worldwide phenomenon. There are hundreds of local roller derby leagues not only in the United States, but Canada, Australia and Europe. Most of the local groups similarly play up the campy retro pin-up/hot rod iconography and everyone involved sure looks like they’re having a good time. Between teams there’s a vibe of good natured competitiveness and camaraderie. In the US, these groups exist under the auspices of a national organization called the Womens Flat Track Derby Association. Las Vegas has the ‘Sin City Roller Girls’, Portland, Oregon the ‘Rose City Rollers” and Seattle the ‘Rat City Rollers’. There are now groups in not only the larger and traditionally “hipper” cities but also smaller communities such as Birmingham, Alabama and Omaha, Nebraska.

This organic rebirth and growth of roller derby is a result of young women taking what essentially was TV time filler and made it into their own distaff ‘action sport’. The roller derby circa 2009 is a matriarchal success story. No one is in it for the money, as these local groups are typically run as non-profit organization. The women involved have recreated this sport, and run it, promote it and compete in it on their own terms.

The new generation rollergirls also pay homage to their sports’ pioneers. Many of the individual group websites have sections devoted to the history of roller derby, and the late Ann Calvello–regarded as the Queen of the original Roller Derby–is revered as something of a patron saint. The Texas Rollergirl group featured in the A&E series has renamed their championship the Calvello Cup.

Following Tuesday night’s bench clearing clash between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees, the MLB gave suspensions to the two central troublemakers – Jorge Posada and Jesse Carlson. For their role in Tuesday night’s brawl, Posada and Carlson both got 4-game suspensions. Their suspensions happened to be reduced to 3 games since neither Posada nor Carlson fought the suspension.

If someone can explain to me how the MLB came up with 4 games each, I’d truly appreciate it.

When it comes to the number of games a player gets for his actions, it’s anyone’s guess. It appears to me there are no firm rules for penalties. That’s a large dilemma in my eyes.

Let’s have a look at two non-drug related suspensions that have been given so far in 2009:

Does everyone else see what’s wrong here? There’s no rhyme or explanation for all of the suspensions.

How did Youkilis and Porcello get five games for provoking a bench-clearing fracas, but Posada and Carlson only received 3 games? What did Youkilis and Porcello do differently that their fight resulted in 2 extra games?

In my belief, a bench-clearing fight is a dugout-clearing brawl. They’re similar to coincidences; there are no levels.

How does Beckett receive a six-game penalty for pitching at someone’s head, although Zambrano becomes the same game suspension for roughing up a water cooler? I did not realize possibly ending someone’s career could be just as detrimental as roughing up an inanimate object.

This is not a Red Sox-Yankee dilemma – this is a reasonable issue. I feel like I’m off the rocker even writing something such as this. If you do A, you get B. It’s as easy as that.

Major League Baseball – and I am talking about you Bob Watson – has to come up a benchmark suspension for each infraction.

Right now, it just doesn’t make any sense.

Come to the best baseball forums online and answer sports trivia at RootZoo.

To get fit you need to train hard. Serious training requires careful and accurate record-keeping. With the Garmin Forerunner 405 plus heart rate monitor makes accurate record keeping a breeze with the touch of a few buttons.

Seasoned atheletes and aspiring marathon runners alike will all get great benefits from the Garmin 405. The reason most training is done in a lackluster fashion is that it requires an effort to compile the records that make for a good training regimen. The Garmin 405 keeps an accurate record of time spent training.

It keeps records of the pace and distance travelled. The 405 gps watch also keeps track of calories expended with the addition of a few extra data points. The 124×95 pixel screen can track and display your heat rate.

As GPS Running Watches go the Garmin 405 is a great looking watch. Easily at home on your wrist for everyday use as it is whilst training.

It weighs only 2.1 ounces and the GPS function can be turned off to save the batteries when not training. With the heart-rate monitor it is a little over $300, the same as a good dress watch. Instead of equipping the case with a number of function buttons Garmin invented the touch bezel. This means that instructions can be given to the watch by tapping the appropriate spot on the bezel. Additionally the case is water resistant and shock proof.

The new ANT+Sport wireless technology is a great addition to the 405. The watch can communicate with similarly equipped watches. A training buddy can share the same route and routine if they have a similar watch. It can even communicate with non-Garmin devices.

Data can be downloaded to a PC. Aspects of your training regimen can be downloaded from the watch into Garmin’s Training Center software for detailed analysis. This watch and software become the ultimate training tool by keeping track of your heart beat and breaking down section of you training to improve performance. Training routines and data can also be uploaded to the watch.

The Virtual Partner is a fun motivational function of the Garmin 405. A make believe running partner will appear on the screen next to the user’s display. The 405 can even communicate with Garmin’s bicycle-mounted GPS computers. Cross-training has never been simpler or more fun.

The first solution to trim down abdomen fat and other health hazards is to have a well-balanced nourishing diet.

The artery clogging process can be retarded down by having a proper diet. When you combine a good life style modification with this, you may end the narrowing of the arteries.

A diet plan which can serve you in your agenda to lose your stomach fat and to prevent the health hazards are listed below.

By consuming more of the legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits, you increase your capacity to combat against the heart disease.

You must choose the foods with calories accordingly. For that you must keep in mind the succeeding tips.

Serve a bare marginal of saturated fats and trans-fatty fats (for example, fats discovered in butter, salad dressing, sweets and desserts). Instead of your regular fat foods, you can use olive oil and peanut oil that are rich in monounsaturated fats or corn, soybean and sunflower oil that are rich in polyunsaturated fats.

Take variety of protein foods. But have the right amount. Meat and dairy products are also protein foods. But when they increase in their amounts, they lead to heart disease. You can have balancing lean animal, fish and vegetable sources of protein.

The dietary cholesterol in your body can lead to high levels of blood cholesterol. When you give a check on this, you may have other uses of it. Since cholesterol and saturated fats are discovered in the same foods, by avoiding this, you can reduce your fat intake.

If you feel tired, you can consume compound carbohydrates like whole grain breads, sweet potatoes and whole wheat pasta rather than simple carbohydrates like sweets, sugar and regular soft drinks.

You should eat little every 2-3 hours. Only skipping meals will lead you to over eat. Frequent eating will control your blood sugar levels, burn your excess calories and regulate your cholesterol levels.

De-emphasize salt. This will assist you to check your blood pressure.

Encourage exercise. The human body is meant to be active. Workout strengthens the heart muscle, improves blood flow, reduces high blood pressure, raises HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol), and helps control blood sugars and body weight.

Hydrate your body often. Water is very required to our body. You will remain energetic all day and also eat less, if you’re drinking water often. You must atleast drink 1-2 liters of water, i.e., 32 – 64 ounces. But be sure that you’re not liquid restricted.

An excellent motto to follow is dietary enhancement, not deprivation. When people enjoy what they eat, they feel more positive about life, which helps them feel better.

The quantities of food to be taken and type of foods to be taken are given below.

1 slice of bread, 1 starch food in the size of compact disc case.

1 cup raw vegetables, 1 fruit.

1 teaspoon olive oil, 1 fat food.

3 ounces cooked meat, 1 protein food in the size of deck of cards.

Hence, you can shape your body in this simple way.

Lose tummy fat by doing the best tummy exercises and get rid of it forever.

Using a heart rate monitor isn’t as simple as buying one and using it instantly during workouts. One must keep a few things in mind, and the most important reminder in the use of heart rate monitors is to know the level of workout that your heart can sustain.

To find this out, you must be able to calculate your maximum heart rate or MRH, and the targeted heart rate that you wish to work on. This can be done by following a certain formula. First, you have to get the difference between 220 and your age. After getting the result, multiply that difference to a certain percentage that would serve as the lower end in your exercise range. Multiply the difference of 220 and your age again with another percentage, only this time, that percentage would be the higher end. The two products should now serve as your heart rate in your training.

For example, this can be illustrated using a 25 year old person. The difference between 220 and 25 is 195. The number 195 is then multiplied by 65%, and the result would be would be 26.75, or rounded off to 127. If you multiply 195 again, but this time with 80%, then you would arrive at 156. This means that the desired heart rate during a training session must be anywhere from 127 to 156 beats each minute.

With regard to the percentages, you do not merely choose a number. The percentages are based on training boundaries. The 50%-60% range is for a healthy heart, and it is considered good for your daily exercise. The 60%-70% range is for aerobics and for burning fats, while the 70%-80% range is for endurance training. The 80-90% range is called the anaerobic threshold zone, which can greatly enhance cardiovascular fitness.

Now that you have been able to calculate your targeted heart rates, it is time to wear your heart rate monitors. Dampen the back of the chest transmitter so that it would fit snugly on the skin where it will come in contact. Adjust it accordingly, but don’t take deep breaths. Women would find it easier to put on the heart rate monitor if it were placed under the bra and breasts.

Now it is time to turn on your heart rate monitor. If you should find abnormal or hyper or dead reading after starting it try putting it in another position. Keep in mind also that the monitors tend to easily pick up other transmitters.

A heart rate monitor also requires that it be taken care of properly. Most of these devices are water resistant, but nonetheless they should be placed in dry places with enough room around them. They can be cleaned with warm water and soap and then dried of with a soft towel. No alcohol should be used and batteries need to be replaced every now and then.

With the right heart rate calculations, along with proper use and proper care, heart rate monitors will be great companions in healthy workouts. Working out with the right tools and knowledge is the best way to achieve a heart-friendly life.

There are many people who are concerned about the accuracy of heart rate monitors and are therefore worried that they might not be good to use when exercising. There is in reality nothing to be worried about since a heart rate monitor will use many factors to determine the rate and if it is wrong, it is probably because someone didn’t ensure accuracy. If properly used, the results are almost always very accurate.

The first heart rate monitoring device that was meant for personal use was invented back in 1977. This device was based on the same principles as the EKG and was also designed to have the same accuracy. A cross country skiing team was the first to use the heart rate monitoring devices and it was supposed to help them train better.

Ever since that first heart rate monitor was used, all monitors made afterwards have aimed for accuracy, since it is an essential feature of any monitoring device. It is easy enough to determine if a heart rate monitor is accurate or not since the pulse rate can also be taken manually, although this is less convenient.

The heart rate monitor is meant to make the process of keeping track of heart rates as easy as possible and to also help you be sure that your workouts are optimal and not overly strenuous. If the device is not able to provide accurate readings, then there would be no point in having one.

With heart rate monitors being a top selling fitness device, there has to be something right with them. If they were inaccurate then everyone would know and people would stop buying them. However, there have been some problems reported with the accuracy of some heart rate monitors. These reports, though, have prompted changes and advancement in the newer monitors now on the market.

One of the biggest problems with early models was that electromagnetic waves from other electronic equipment would interfere with the heart rate monitor. This would result in readings that were not accurate. However, this is not an issue anymore since almost all newer models have a built-in feature capable of blocking this interference.

One of the most common issues, however, is user error. If the monitor is not put on right or used properly, then the results are going to be inaccurate. To avoid this it is imperative to read the instructions and all other literature that came with the monitoring device. This way you are sure to use it correctly.

Finally, make sure that you purchase the right kind of heart rate monitor. Usually the chest band models are the most accurate, but there are also many other styles and it is possible that one of them will be more suitable for you. The only way to know is to test the different models in advance, such as at a gym, and determine which provides you with the most accurate results.

Grab your touring bike and lets take a fun outdoor adventure. You have the destination but you just don’t know what type of bicycle saddle bags you’ll need. You need to know how far you’re traveling and how many nights, if more than one. How long is your trip? Will you travel a short distance and take your time over several days or really max out your daily miles on the bike? Finally, how much weight will you carry on your bicycle?

If you’re going on a short trip then you probably wont need large panniers that sit over the front and rear wheel. So if you’re traveling a short distance for only a day trip then you probably need smaller bags that don’t require an over the wheel rack to mount them. These include; behind the seat bags, handlebar bags, and under the top tube bags.

I would start by looking at behind the seat saddle bags. These are really easy to mount right under the seat and cause the least impact to your riding. Low wind resistance and they don’t impede your ability to steer or pedal the bike.

What Type Of Bicycle Saddle Bags Do I Need?

The same goes for a handlebar bag. It will hold about the same amount as a large behind the seat bag and rests right on your handlebars. The only caveat is that you must remember that having anything attached to your handlebars will slow your ability to turn the bike. So keep your loads light in handlebar bags.

Finally a under the top tube bag is typically the smallest and most aerodynamic type of bag. It attaches right under the top tube of the bike. Some of these bags actually double as shoulder carry straps if you need to carry the bike over rough terrain.

If you are going to take a long tour across long distances then you will have sleeping gear, food, extra liquid and more weight in general. Trying to stuff your handlebar bag too full will cause you to lose balance, not be able to turn quickly in an emergency, and crash. Instead, get some bicycle saddle bags or panniers will suit your needs perfectly.

Bike panniers take quite a bit longer to attach and will create a decent amount of wind drag but the benefits make them very worthwhile. Since they mount on racks mounted above the front and rear wheels, you can carry much more weight safely and low to the ground. So finding the right bicycle saddle bags is simple and fun.

Over time you may start to notice those gym workouts not necessarily doing what they supposed to do. If you’re starting to have issues when trying to build muscle mass, it is definitely something to be concerned about.

In fact, this is one of the most frustrating bodybuilding issues individuals just like yourself go through every day. This is a huge culprit to sucking out all the motivation from your body, which eventually leads to little or no results at all. Today, let’s go over a few ways you can keep this from happening to you.

1) Calories. Yes, those who don’t eat enough and get a healthy dose of calories could be having issues with muscle gain. The whole idea here is to eat high calorie meals.

The recommended eating frame is every 2 hours. If you can stick with this, we also recommend adding certain foods during snack periods. Things like yogurt, protein bars, and dried fruits are a great option. You might need a protein shake as well, or a few of them throughout the day. This way your calories will be covered.

2) Protein. In order to take your muscle mass to new heights in a shorter period of time, you have to eat and drink lots of protein. The going rate is about 5 grams of protein per pound. We recommend healthy choices like chicken, fish, turkey, and dairy products are all great ways to help build muscle mass.

What it comes down to is that you need excess calories so you can grow. Eventually you will want to cut out all the unhealthy calories and specifically target the good ones. For now however, you need to look for quality protein. The best place to find it is through purchasing large tubs of whey protein.

3) Then of course you can’t forget about your workout. If you have spent a ton of the time in the gym doing the same routine over and over again, it’s going to create a little dullness. In fact, it could be the difference between you actually enjoying your bodybuilding workouts, or simply going through the motions to build muscle mass.

The best way we believe to do this is by using different variations. Maybe instead of using the same routine, this time you do everything backwards. Maybe you go through a faster routine with less in between breaks. Then again, maybe you just need a week to relax and allow the body to completely recover.

4) Time off is important, and we want to make sure one little section is dedicated to these points. The truth is, no one can build muscle mass just going to the gym. You have to take breaks, rest the body, and then go heavy with your workouts once more. The truth is your time at home is the most important.

Another way to work around this is by dropping your session to just one workout per muscle group each week. Obviously you want to lower the amount of sets for each body part as well. Instead, focus on utilizing 3-5 intense sets per body part, per workout. Trust us, even if you’re worried about it being enough, it will be.

5) Is your water consumption high enough? If you don’t drink plenty of water then your progress won’t be as fast it should be. In order to grow, your muscles need copious amounts of water. Always carry a water bottle with you and use it frequently.
